It involves the death and malfunction of vital nerve cells in the mind, called neurons. Some of these dying neurons produce dopamine, a chemical substance that sends text messages to the area of the brain that controls motion and coordination. As PD progresses, the amount of dopamine created in the mind decreases, departing a person unable to normally control movement.
